Raclette grills are a special type of hot plate. It has two racks, where the lower rack has small pans containing slices of cheese. There is a heating element above the lower rack, and then slices of meat, fish or vegetables on the top rack. The heating element will simultaneously melt the cheese on the lower rack, and cook the food on the upper rack. You can then pour the cheese on the foods on the upper rack, or spread it on bread. You can find raclette grills that can accommodate as many as 8 people cooking and eating together at a time. Then there are more intimate raclette grills, which suffice for only two people at a time. Besides making dinnertime more of a social event, they also are easier to clean than a regular stove, having a grill top made from non-stick aluminum or stone, or with a teflon coating.
