Buying Guide for the Best Underwater Cameras

When you want to take pictures of the great outdoors, sometimes you'll be exposed to extreme conditions. The most breathtaking shots are of regions and climates that we don't see everyday. So you'll want a tough camera that will be designed to withstand being submerged in water. But there is a difference between taking pictures of your children in a pool, and going scuba diving and taking pictures of marine life. You'll also want a camera that can withstand high and low temperatures. And it also shouldn't be so fragile that it will break while hiking. Here is a guide to some of the best waterproof cameras on the market.

Types

  • Standard: A standard camera does the things that you would expect a camera to do (taking pictures and, in some cases, videos), only underwater.
  • Multi-purpose: Multi-purpose cameras take pictures and videos, but they also come with additional features, such as WiFi compatibility (which lets you immediately upload your pictures onto the internet.)

What Reviewers Have to Say

  • Delays between shots: The camera has to recharge between shots, so it is of interest to know the time you have to wait between shots. A two-second delay is considered reasonable.

  • Battery Life: Some new waterproof cameras are equipped with extra features, like GPS and WiFi. When a camera has a lot of features, it can also use up a lot of power. So you want to know how many shots you can take without having to charge or change your batteries.

  • Field of view: This tells you how much of a scene you can capture with your camera. You'll want a big field of view if you are interested in capturing big landscapes.

Important Features

  • Depth rating: When looking at the specifications for an underwater camera, be sure to check out how far underwater it can be taken. If you usually stay to within a few feet of the surface, most cameras can handle that, but if you plan on going deeper, be sure to find a camera that can handle it.
  • Duration: In addition to the depth a camera can handle, it’s a good idea to see how long it can be kept underwater; be sure to pick a camera that can stay in the water as long as you plan on being there.
  • Modes: If you just plan on taking still pictures, then there is no need to look for a camera that can do other things (a simpler camera might also be less expensive). If you want more options, however, be sure to check out all of what a camera can do before making a purchase.
  • Button size: This is something that might be easy to overlook, but it’s important—be sure to pick a camera that has buttons that are big enough for you to use easily while underwater, especially if you use gloves while diving.
