Dyson handheld vacuums are famous for their innovative design and power. But, on average, the battery in a handheld Dyson model lasts for around 4 years. If you notice that your Dyson vacuum doesn’t vacuum for very long even when fully charged, and has to be on the charger all the time when not in use, it might be a sign to replace the battery. If your Dyson vacuum costs $240, there’s no need to chuck it just because the battery is dying. (Some Dyson products can cost closer to $1000! Then a $31 replacement battery is a no-brainer.) That’s where replacement batteries for Dyson handheld vacuums enter the picture.
There are a number of companies that make replacement batteries for Dyson equipment and appliances. But you certainly want to get the best choice of a replacement battery, with the capacity to hold its charge for a long time, and also able to hold up to a lot of recharging cycles. We’ve composed this buyer’s guide to help you make the right decision when selecting a replacement battery for a Dyson handheld vacuum. It'll help you:
Choose the right type of replacement battery for your Dyson handheld vacuum,
See useful tips about that particular type of replacement battery,
Read reviews of different replacement batteries, and what customers are saying,
Select the right brand of Dyson handheld vacuum replacement battery, and
Compare prices and find the best deals.
Dyson original battery: You can find replacement batteries for your Dyson product through the Dyson website. For example, the replacement battery for the Dyson V6 Trigger is suitable for 13 other V6 versions. It will typically cost $95.99.

Compatible battery: There are companies that make batteries compatible for Dyson vacuums, called “aftermarket batteries”. They will be considerably cheaper than ordering an OEM original from Dyson. For example, Glosse’s replacement battery for the Dyson V6 models can cost $42.69.
The OEM battery is generally more reliable: “OEM” stands for “original equipment manufacturer”. For example, the battery that comes with your Dyson vacuum is the OEM part. One customer who replaced the OEM battery with the Glosse version for the Dyson V6 noticed a definite decrease in battery life. In fact, the Gloss product stopped charging after 3 months! This is as opposed to his 5-year-old OEM battery which still held a charge for 20 minutes (it held its charge for 45 minutes when it was new).
Note difference between Type A and Type B: Powerextra makes replacement batteries for Dyson DC44 handheld vacuums. But there is a difference between their DC44 and DC44 MK2 batteries, as well as a difference between the Dyson DC31 and DC31 Type B. So take care when ordering, that the battery will be compatible!

Warranty: The original battery in the Dyson vacuum is under warranty for two years. Unfortunately, it will usually be over two years when you start to notice any degradation in battery life. Most companies dealing with replacement batteries, such as E-TS, give you a 12-month warranty on the battery.
Fade-free power: Dyson batteries are lithium-ion batteries, which mean that they provide fade-free performance: As long as the battery is sufficiently charged to run the device, the vacuum will run at full strength. You won’t see that it has less suction as the battery runs down.
Safety features: You’ll see batteries with a number of safety features, such as over-charge, over-discharge, over-voltage, over-current, and overheating protection. Overcharge protection is a feature where no more current goes to the battery when it reaches its terminal voltage. Over-discharge protection means that there will not be any serious degradation in battery life if you drain the battery too low. (Although a battery will have more capacity if you drain it completely, it also reduces the battery’s overall lifetime.) Over-voltage protection is to ensure that the battery is not damaged if it is charged to the maximum voltage. And overcurrent protection ensures that the battery will not be damaged by a short circuit (which hits it with a sudden blast of electrical current).
Can you leave it in the charger all the time?: Lithium-ion batteries, such as those used in Dyson vacuums, used to be prone to damage if they were left in the charger all the time. This is less of a concern nowadays--but it is recommended that you stop charging once it reaches 80% of its full charge.
Battery capacity: You’ll see battery capacity given in units of milliamperes-hour or mAh. The Dyson original battery for the V6 vacuum, for example, will typically have a capacity of 3500 mAh. That means that it will provide a current of 3500 milliamperes (3.5 Amperes) for 1 hour of time. In actuality, most Dyson vacuums give only 20 minutes of use on a single charge in regular mode, and 2 minutes in MAX mode, when it demands significantly more current. It requires 3.5 hours of charging to become fully charged when you first purchase the new battery, and 40 minutes subsequently.
Laboratory certification: You’ll see that some batteries have certifications for meeting quality standards. Examples include CE, MSDS, and RoHS. "CE" stands for Conformite Euorpeenne, that the battery conforms to European Union standards. "MSDS" stands for Material Safety Data Sheet, which lists the battery’s composition and possible hazards. "RoHS" stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances--so RoHS approval means that the battery doesn’t contain any hazardous materials.
