Buying Guide for the Best Jojoba Oils

Jojoba oil is derived from the jojoba plant, which is native to the southwest United States. The seeds of the plant are 50% oil. Native American Indians have used the oil from the seeds for cooking and medicinal purposes as early as 1769. And jojoba oil has been a staple in cosmetics, shampoos and conditioners for almost 50 years. (It also was used as a lubricant for vehicles and machinery in World War II.) It is a very stable oil, that can be stored for years without becoming rancid. Here is a guide to some of the best jojoba oils on the market.

Types

Jojoba oil has been found to be very similar to the oils produced by human skin naturally. It doesn't clog pores or cause allergic reactions—which is why it has become an ingredient in cosmetics and toiletries. There are two major forms of the oil:

  • Pure Jojoba Oil: When in its pure, unrefined form, jojoba oil has a bright, golden color, and is practically odorless.

  • Refined Jojoba Oil: When processed, jojoba oil is clear and transparent. (The refinement process is usually performed in a natural process using diatomaceous earth.) The oil is then used in health and beauty products that require a colorless oil.

What Reviewers Have to Say

Based on all the consumers' reviews we've scanned, these are the top things they mentioned about their new stuff:

  • Fungicide and antibiotic: Jojoba oil has been found to kill staph infections and the candida fungus. People who have suffered from itchy scalp or dandruff due to a fungus have noticed some relief when applying jojoba oil. (Jojoba oil contains the minerals zinc and selenium, which are used to control dandruff.)

  • Skin moisturizer: Since it's similar to human sebum, people notice that just a few drops of jojoba oil in the morning and evening is enough to keep their skin moisturized the entire day. It comes out cheaper than commercial moisturizers.

  • Hair conditioner: People have noticed that jojoba oil is good as a hair conditioner. They apply it to the roots of the hair after a shower and blow-drying the hair. The oil forms a waxy coating on the hair to protect it from becoming dry. Others apply jojoba oil together with their shampoo, to prevent the shampoo from removing the oil that the hair has naturally.

  • Makeup remover: Since jojoba oil doesn't clog pores, it is useful as a makeup remover. It doesn't have the side effects that are noticed with other makeup removers.

Important Features

  • Treatment for acne: Jojoba oil is used to treat acne. It is chemically similar to sebum, the oil produced by human skin. Applying it to the skin induces the skin to produce less sebum of its own. This eliminates one of the causes of acne: the skin producing sebum that gets clogged in a pore, causing the acne pimple with the familiar “whitehead”. Jojoba oil also is an antibacterial, and can kill the bacteria that are one of the causes of acne. Simply cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser (such as 5-10% benzoyl peroxide wash, or tea tree oil wipes), and gently apply jojoba oil. After an initial period where the bacteria, pus and dirt come to the skin's surface, you should see a noticeable improvement in your acne condition.

  • Is it pure?: Jojoba oil becomes a solid wax when it goes below 10 °C (50 °F). So putting it in the fridge will solidify it. It will revert back to being an oil at room temperature. If it doesn't solidify in the refrigerator, that may be an indication that the oil has been mixed with something else.
